Our story and why we began
Founded in London by Dionne Lewis-Reid and Thanyia Moore, Hair Not Necessary was born from a simple truth: a woman's hair does not define her beauty, femininity or identity. We are creating a home where being bald or cropped is standard, celebrated and free from unwanted questions.

Inspired by sisterhood and shared freedom
Modelled on the bold spirit of US gatherings like BaldieCon, Dionne and Thanyia created Hair Not Necessary to build a visible, joyful UK community. Whether on our filmed podcast or over drinks in London, we offer a space where being bald is lived out loud, shared with humour, and embraced with total unapologetic pride.

Every reason is valid, every journey welcome
Alopecia, chemotherapy, hormonal changes, personal style, or simply shaving it off because you love the look—we never rank reasons. Wigs, wraps, and scarves are celebrated too, because genuine empowerment is about personal choice. We protect emotional safety while creating conversations full of warmth and laughter.

Diversity by design in everything we do
From our guests behind the microphone to every social meet-up, our community deliberately champions Black women, South Asian women, trans women, older women, and disabled women. We celebrate individuality and make sure nobody has to justify or explain how they show up in the room.
"Hair not necessary. Confidence not optional."
